Detroit Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping with New Fencing Strategy

Detroit, MI | June 24, 2025 — As Detroit continues its urban revitalization efforts, city officials are launching a bold new crackdown on illegal dumping — and temporary fence rentals are playing a surprising but critical role in the solution.

The Department of Public Works has identified over 70 dumping hotspots across the city where abandoned lots, alleyways, and vacant buildings have become targets for illegal disposal of construction debris, old appliances, and hazardous waste.

“Illegal dumping is costing taxpayers millions each year and is a major barrier to neighborhood recovery,” said Tonya Willis, the city’s Director of Sanitation and Blight Removal. “We needed a fast, flexible solution — and fencing is proving to be one of our most effective tools.”

In partnership with local vendors like Leading Rental LLC, the city has begun installing temporary fencing around high-risk areas to deter unauthorized access. The fences are also used to protect lots that are scheduled for redevelopment, demolition, or clean-up under the city’s blight removal program.

“Within just days of fencing off an empty lot in the Chandler Park area, the dumping stopped completely,” Willis reported. “It’s simple, cost-effective, and sends a message that we’re watching.”

Residents, too, are welcoming the initiative. Neighborhood associations across districts like Brightmoor and Delray have been requesting temporary fence installations near schools, parks, and playgrounds that are adjacent to neglected lots.

“It’s about pride and safety,” said Marcus Taylor, a community leader in East Side Detroit. “You can't invite investment into a community when the first thing people see is trash. Fencing up those lots is a huge first step.”

For Leading Rental LLC, the surge in demand has led to more than just business growth. “We’re proud to be part of Detroit’s comeback story,” said Anne Smith, Director of Sales. “Our fencing is being used to protect properties, restore neighborhoods, and help the city enforce the law.”

The city plans to expand the program over the summer, with funding secured through a combination of state grants and blight-fighting initiatives. Officials are also exploring solar-powered surveillance fencing as the next phase in deterrence.

As Detroit reclaims its streets, it’s clear that sometimes the strongest defense starts with a simple fence.
