Detroit Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping: City Turns to Fence Rentals to Secure Vacant Lots

Detroit, MI — June 27, 2025 — In a bold new move to combat illegal dumping, Detroit officials have launched a citywide initiative that uses temporary fence rentals and barricades to secure dozens of vacant lots notorious for trash dumping and abandoned vehicles.

The effort comes in response to mounting complaints from residents who say illegal dumping has spiraled out of control in parts of the city, especially in neighborhoods like Brightmoor and sections of the east side. City leaders believe that temporary fence rentals are one of the fastest and most effective ways to deter dumpers and reclaim blighted properties.

“We’ve identified more than 80 high-risk lots where we’ll be installing temporary fencing or barricades immediately,” said Erica Thomas, Deputy Director of Detroit’s Department of Neighborhoods. “With fence rentals, we can secure these lots quickly and send a clear message that they are off-limits for illegal dumping.”

Local fence rental companies have been quick to respond to the city’s needs, supplying chain-link panels, barricades, and privacy windscreens for rapid deployment. “This is the largest spike in fence rental orders we’ve seen for vacant property security,” said Andre Wilson, operations manager at a leading Detroit fence rental service. “It’s rewarding to see our rental fences being used to protect neighborhoods.”

Residents living near the targeted lots say the fences are already making a difference. Tanya Reed, who resides near a freshly secured lot in Jefferson-Chalmers, described a dramatic improvement. “Before the fence went up, people dumped everything from tires to broken furniture. Now with the rental fencing in place, there’s a sense of respect for the space — and for the community,” Reed said.

The temporary fences often include windscreens, which block the view of empty lots and discourage future dumping by making it harder for violators to find accessible spots. City officials are also considering converting some secured lots into gardens or small parks in the long term, once they remain clean.

Detroit’s innovative use of fence rentals and barricades is drawing interest from other cities facing similar dumping crises. Officials hope the success of this initiative will inspire broader adoption of rental fencing strategies as an affordable and immediate solution to urban blight.
